India is actively engaging with U.S. authorities to address concerns related to the recent changes in American visa regulations, which could impact Indian students and academic visitors. During a media briefing on Friday, Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for the External Affairs Ministry, confirmed that New Delhi is closely observing the situation. The Indian government plans to continue discussing these issues with Washington to ensure that Indian citizens do not face undue hardships.
The new regulations, introduced by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, have brought stricter residency rules for holders of F, J, and I category visas. These categories include international students, exchange visitors, and media professionals. Previously, individuals with these visas could stay in the U.S. for extended periods without ongoing federal oversight. However, under the revised framework, they will now have fixed periods of stay.
A significant change for F visa holders is the reduction in the grace period allowed after completing their studies. Instead of having 60 days to leave the country, transfer to another institution, or alter their immigration status, students now have only 30 days. This adjustment necessitates quicker decision-making for those nearing the end of their academic programs.
Indian officials have pointed out that while visa and immigration policies are the prerogative of sovereign nations, they remain dedicated to offering support to Indian citizens. They reiterated their commitment to alleviating any challenges these updated rules might present. The ongoing dialogue between India and the U.S. aims to ensure that the transition to these new regulations is as smooth as possible for those affected.
