Union Home Minister Amit Shah has unveiled an ambitious roadmap for a drug-free India by 2029, focusing on the prevention of narcotics trafficking across the nation’s borders. This initiative, known as Nasha Mukt Bharat 2029, targets three critical areas: reducing the supply of drugs, cutting down demand, and minimizing harm associated with drug use. Shah emphasized that since 2019, the government has launched a comprehensive national campaign to dismantle drug networks operating within the country.
Key strategies highlighted by Shah include the implementation of the four-tier NCORD mechanism and the establishment of Anti-Narcotics Task Forces in every state and Union Territory. Additionally, the government has introduced a national rehabilitation helpline, the NIDAN database to track narcotics offenders, and advanced data-driven mapping to identify drug networks and hotspots. These measures are part of an extensive effort to combat drug-related issues on multiple fronts.
The impact of these initiatives has been significant, with enforcement agencies seizing over 29,968 kg of synthetic drugs valued at more than ₹19,600 crore between 2020 and July 2026. Furthermore, from 2019 to July 2026, the total seizures of narcotic and psychotropic substances surpassed 93.34 lakh kg. These figures underscore the scale of the government’s efforts to curb drug trafficking and abuse across India.
In addition to drug seizures, authorities have also taken steps to dismantle the financial networks supporting narcotics trade. Properties worth ₹1,841 crore have been confiscated in 3,016 cases between 2024 and June 2026, highlighting the government’s determination to target both the drugs themselves and the economic infrastructure underpinning their distribution.
During his visit to Goa, Shah reviewed the state’s security preparedness but had to shorten his schedule to return to Delhi. His engagement in Goa underscores the ongoing commitment to ensuring robust security measures in the fight against drug trafficking and related crimes.
