India has highlighted the critical importance of maintaining peace and tranquillity along its border with China as a foundation for improving bilateral relations. This emphasis came during a meeting in Beijing between India’s National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. This meeting represents the 25th round of talks dedicated to resolving the long-standing boundary dispute between the two nations. Discussions centered on advancing boundary delimitation, enhancing border management, and fostering cooperation across the frontier.
Both sides acknowledged positive developments in their bilateral relations and explored strategies to uphold stability along the Line of Actual Control. They reiterated their commitment to pursuing a political resolution to the boundary issue, guided by their long-term interests. The talks build upon the progress following the 2024 understanding between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping, aimed at easing tensions in the Ladakh sector. Since then, several initiatives, including people-to-people exchanges, the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra, and border trade via designated routes, have been revitalized.
Ajit Doval emphasized that the normalization of bilateral ties is closely linked to maintaining peace at the border. In contrast, the Chinese side suggested that the boundary issue should be viewed within the broader context of their relationship. While the meeting did not disclose significant details about the actual demarcation of the disputed boundary, both countries agreed to continue negotiations. The next round of special representative talks is scheduled to take place in India in 2027.
The timing of these discussions is noteworthy as they precede the anticipated visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping to India for the BRICS summit in September. This adds an additional layer of importance to the efforts aimed at further stabilizing bilateral relations.
