Jaishankar: India Emerges as Key Middle Power with $4 Trillion Economy

India’s influence as a “middle power” was emphasized by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, who highlighted the country’s $4 trillion economy and its population of 1.4 billion during a discussion at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum. Speaking alongside Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand, Jaishankar pointed to the growing collaboration among countries with shared interests to navigate a changing global order and enhance their roles in international decision-making.

The conversation centered on the importance of middle powers in the face of geopolitical uncertainty and evolving global economic relationships. Jaishankar noted that nations are increasingly focused on assessing their national interests, forming independent policies, and building partnerships to tackle common challenges. He cited initiatives like the Quad and the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) as examples of strategic and economic cooperation among countries.

Jaishankar’s remarks underscored a shift in global governance, with more countries seeking greater influence over international affairs. This aligns with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s call for middle powers to unite in protecting multilateralism and adapting to changes in the international system. Jaishankar emphasized the need for these nations to closely engage with one another to identify and collaborate on aligned interests.

Anita Anand echoed this sentiment, urging middle powers to take a more active leadership role in shaping the international order. She highlighted Canada’s efforts through trade agreements, security partnerships, and participation in multilateral platforms like the G7 as ways to protect international rules, bolster economic resilience, and address emerging security challenges.

The discussion highlighted the importance of cooperation among middle powers as they navigate geopolitical tensions, economic uncertainties, and shifting global alliances. By working together, these countries aim to strengthen their strategic autonomy while supporting shared interests and creating more resilient supply chains. The conversation at the forum reflected a growing interest among emerging economies in enhancing cooperation while maintaining strategic independence.
