India and Switzerland Forge Agreements to Boost Trade and Technology Ties

India and Switzerland have taken significant steps to bolster their bilateral relations by signing five agreements aimed at enhancing cooperation in trade, mobility, and technology. The agreements were signed on Monday following discussions between India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Swiss President Guy Parmelin, focusing on expanding collaboration in areas such as defence, nuclear energy, and investment.

The agreements encompass migration and mobility, young professionals, transportation, research, innovation, and technology transfer. Notably, both countries have committed to improving market access for Indian exports and encouraging greater Swiss investment. This development coincides with the first anniversary of the India-European Free Trade Association (EFTA) Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement, which seeks to boost trade and employment between India and the EFTA countries.

In particular, India anticipates that the improved access to Swiss markets will support exports in sectors including agriculture, pharmaceuticals, textiles, and engineering. Simultaneously, Swiss companies are being encouraged to explore investment opportunities in biotechnology, life sciences, banking, insurance, food processing, and sustainability.

A key component of the agreements is the migration and mobility partnership, which aims to enhance cooperation while addressing issues of irregular migration and human trafficking. This includes provisions for multiple-entry visas valid for up to five years and renewable permits for students. Additionally, a separate agreement facilitates the exchange of young professionals, allowing 300 individuals from each country to gain temporary employment and acquire professional and language experience annually.

Furthermore, India and Switzerland have expressed interest in deepening their cooperation in military exchanges, defence production, and nuclear energy. The countries are preparing to initiate joint research projects in areas such as health, clean energy, and space. They also intend to foster collaboration in transportation technologies, sustainable infrastructure, electric vehicles, and other mobility systems.

These agreements are expected to strengthen ties between research institutions, businesses, and technology companies in both nations. The leaders also addressed global and regional issues, including the conflicts in Ukraine and West Asia, emphasizing the importance of dialogue and diplomatic efforts to promote peace and stability.
