Ireland Highlights Tech Ties with India, Aims for EU Trade Deal Soon

The European Union has emphasized the significance of its strategic partnership with India, underscoring enhanced collaboration in areas such as trade, technology, security, and connectivity. Both parties are actively working towards finalizing a landmark Free Trade Agreement (FTA) by the year’s end. This development comes as Ireland begins its presidency of the Council of the European Union, where Irish Ambassador Kevin Kelly highlighted the expanding scope of the relationship, which extends beyond trade to include technology, research, climate action, and digital cooperation.

Ambassador Kelly pointed out that the partnership is not only about economic exchange but also about addressing global challenges and fostering long-term economic growth. As negotiations for the proposed India-EU Free Trade Agreement have concluded, the formal signing is anticipated by December, with the agreement potentially taking effect early next year. This agreement is part of a broader effort to deepen ties in critical sectors such as defense, security, and emerging technologies, in response to shifting global economic and geopolitical landscapes.

In view of these developments, EU Ambassador Herve Delphin remarked on the necessity for Europe and India to adapt to the evolving global environment by seeking greater strategic autonomy while maintaining robust partnerships. He highlighted the importance of ensuring freedom of navigation and securing global trade routes, which are vital for both regions.

Ambassador Delphin also called for heightened cooperation between India and the EU in the realms of maritime security and regional stability. This is seen as a crucial step in safeguarding the interests of both regions amidst changing global dynamics. The strengthened partnership is expected to play a pivotal role in promoting mutual benefits and ensuring a resilient and secure future.
