India and Denmark are poised to deepen their collaborative efforts in renewable energy, trade, and maritime development, as the two nations look to strengthen their Green Strategic Partnership established in 2020. Denmark’s Business Minister, Martin Lidegaard, visited Mumbai and New Delhi from November 2 to 3, engaging with Indian government officials and business leaders to explore economic cooperation opportunities.
The focus of Lidegaard’s visit was to develop a new joint action plan that would enhance collaboration in areas of mutual economic and environmental interest. In Mumbai, he visited APM Terminals, a part of the Danish shipping giant Maersk, and discussed investment opportunities with Maharashtra Governor Jishnu Dev Varma.
In New Delhi, Lidegaard’s discussions with Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal centered on expanding bilateral trade and improving business opportunities, especially in the context of the proposed India-European Union free trade agreement. With over 200 Danish companies operating in India and employing more than 100,000 people, the economic ties between the two nations are significant and growing.
A significant portion of the discussions also revolved around sustainable maritime development. Talks with Union Ports and Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal emphasized environmentally friendly shipping and the development of modern port infrastructure and green maritime corridors.
Renewable energy was another key area of focus, with discussions involving Renewable Energy Minister Pralhad Joshi. The talks explored ways to enhance energy efficiency and support India’s transition to a more sustainable power system. Denmark is a key international partner in solar energy development and is actively involved with the International Solar Alliance, further supporting cooperation in renewable energy.
The strengthened partnership between India and Denmark is expected to open new avenues for investment, technological exchange, and sustainable development, thereby deepening economic ties between the two countries.
