India is advancing its plans to procure five more S-400 Triumf air defense systems from Russia. The initiative takes a step forward as Moscow has presented a cost proposal, setting the stage for negotiations with New Delhi. The ultimate decision rests with the Cabinet Committee on Security, which will review the proposal once the price is settled and clearance is obtained from the Finance Ministry. The existing contract, signed in 2018 for $5.43 billion, covers five S-400 systems, with the final installment scheduled for delivery by November 2026.
The addition of these systems is anticipated to bolster India’s air defense capabilities, particularly in the eastern sector bordering China. The S-400 system proved its efficacy during Operation Sindoor in May 2025, playing a pivotal role in India’s air defense operations. This performance has reinforced the argument for expanding the S-400 fleet within the Indian defense framework.
While India is proceeding with the S-400 acquisition, the decision to purchase Russia’s Su-57 fifth-generation fighter aircraft remains pending. Although the Indian Air Force has shown interest in the proposal, particularly in light of China’s deployment of J-20 stealth fighters in Tibet, no definitive decision has been made yet.
The proposed acquisition of additional S-400 systems is likely to be a key topic in broader defense discussions between India and Russia. This dialogue is expected to gain momentum with the upcoming visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to India for the BRICS summit in September.
