This meeting, initiated by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), underscores the government’s concerns regarding Meta’s adherence to digital regulations in India. The discussions are expected to focus on the erroneous removal of the Prime Minister’s content, which occurred despite the platform’s sophisticated content moderation systems.
Meta acted swiftly to reinstate the Reel on the same day, acknowledging the removal as a mistake and reportedly issuing an apology to the Indian government. The video in question tackled issues surrounding the NEET-UG exam paper leak, highlighting proposed measures such as the establishment of fast-track courts and the imposition of stricter penalties for those involved in exam paper leaks.
In addition to the Facebook Reel incident, the government intends to address Instagram’s approach to handling child sexual abuse material (CSAM) and related advertisements. This follows recent directives to eliminate such content from the platform. Another significant topic on the agenda is WhatsApp’s proposed username feature, which has raised concerns among authorities regarding potential risks of impersonation, phishing, identity theft, and online fraud. The government has requested that WhatsApp halt the implementation of this feature until further consultations are conducted.
During the meeting, officials are likely to emphasize the necessity for Meta to align more closely with India’s IT Rules, especially concerning AI-generated content, public order, and the platform’s accountability. The discussions aim to ensure that these platforms operate transparently and responsibly within the regulatory framework set by the Indian authorities.
