In a significant leadership reshuffle at Google DeepMind, co-founder Sir Demis Hassabis is stepping down from his role as chief executive. Hassabis, who established DeepMind in 2010, will transition to become the chair of the organization. In addition to this new position, he will assume the role of chief scientist at Alphabet, Google’s parent company. This shift will see Hassabis stepping away from daily management responsibilities to dedicate more time to advancing long-term AI research and the development of artificial general intelligence.
Taking the helm of DeepMind will be Koray Kavukcuoglu, the current chief technology officer, who will now serve as senior vice-president. Hassabis expressed that this change would allow him to concentrate more on the progressive development of advanced AI technologies and ensure their benefits are aligned with humanity’s interests. Despite the new role, he will continue his responsibilities as the chief executive of Isomorphic Labs, a DeepMind spin-off focused on drug discovery.
This leadership transition is accompanied by the departure of key senior AI engineers from Google. Jeff Dean and Sanjay Ghemawat are set to leave the company to embark on a new venture, Discovery Loop, which will specialize in machine learning and research in science and engineering domains.
The moves come at a time when competition in the AI sector is intensifying. Google is contending with formidable rivals like OpenAI and Anthropic, which have been making noteworthy strides in AI models and coding technologies.
