WhatsApp is introducing a significant update to its privacy features by allowing users to connect through usernames instead of phone numbers. This change represents a major development in how communication is facilitated on the platform. The new feature is currently being phased in, with users getting the chance to reserve unique usernames before a global rollout planned for later this year. Once fully implemented, individuals will be able to initiate chats using a username, thereby avoiding the need to disclose their phone numbers.
To create a username, users can select a unique handle within the app. If someone wishes to contact them, they will only need to know this username, as phone numbers will remain hidden. In cases where a desired username is already taken, WhatsApp will provide alternative suggestions through a built-in generator. Importantly, there will be no public directory for usernames, which means that only individuals who know the exact username can make contact, thus enhancing privacy.
Users interested in reserving a username can check its availability by updating their app and navigating to Settings → Account → Username. Given WhatsApp’s vast user base, the early reservation phase is necessary to manage the high demand for popular usernames. The platform will notify users as the feature becomes available in different regions.
As an additional layer of protection, a “username key” can be utilized, offering a second tier of security. This key can be shared separately, allowing users to control who can initiate conversations with them. The username feature is designed to benefit not only personal users but also creators, businesses, and public accounts, allowing some to align their WhatsApp identity with existing social media handles on platforms like Instagram and Facebook.
WhatsApp has clarified that using usernames remains optional, and those who prefer the traditional method of phone number-based communication can continue without any changes. Users will receive notifications within the app as the feature becomes available across various regions.
