In a significant move to preserve cultural heritage, the West Bengal government has committed financial support to Rath Yatra committees across the state. Sixty committees will receive ₹5 lakh each, marking the first instance of direct state funding for these traditional celebrations. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari emphasized the importance of this initiative, noting that many of the historic wooden chariots, some dating back centuries, are in dire need of repair and renovation.
Adhikari encouraged the committees to utilize the funds meticulously for the restoration and upkeep of these iconic chariots. This financial aid underscores the state’s dedication to maintaining its cultural and religious traditions, ensuring that the Rath Yatra festivities can continue to flourish for future generations.
Beyond this immediate financial assistance, the government has also planned an aerial flower shower for devotees participating in the Shravan Yatra, a 30-kilometer pilgrimage in the Hooghly district’s Tarakeshwar area. This gesture aims to enhance the spiritual experience of the pilgrims. Additionally, the state will set up Seva Kendras at 75 fair locations, providing essential services such as medical aid, police assistance, and drinking water to the participants.
Looking ahead, the West Bengal government intends to extend its financial support to more Rath Yatra committees, reflecting a broader commitment to religious and cultural tourism. A substantial investment of ₹1,000 crore over the next three years is also planned for the development of the Bengal Shaktipeeth Circuit. This ambitious project seeks to promote pilgrimage tourism, restore historic temples, and thereby boost religious tourism across the region.
