India and Poland to Boost Defence, Nuclear Energy, and Tech Cooperation

India and Poland are set to enhance their collaboration across several strategic sectors, including defence, space, nuclear energy, and advanced technologies. This decision emerged from discussions between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, who also aimed to double their bilateral trade by 2030.

The leaders underscored the potential for joint development and production in critical areas such as defence equipment, space technology, and nuclear energy. They also explored opportunities in critical minerals, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and fintech. Modi invited Polish companies to partner with India in co-development and co-production efforts, while Tusk emphasized the need to diversify access to strategic resources to bolster economic security.

Both nations are ambitious to increase their bilateral trade from approximately $6.3 billion to double that figure by 2030. As part of these efforts, a delegation of nearly 100 Polish companies is currently investigating business opportunities in sectors like defence, agriculture technology, pharmaceuticals, food processing, mining, infrastructure, and technology.

Defence cooperation remains a pivotal focus, with the two countries working towards an agreement on the protection and exchange of classified information to support closer defence-industrial collaboration. They have also agreed to establish a defence industry dialogue and a counterterrorism dialogue. Additionally, the countries are exploring the joint manufacturing of military equipment, drones, and satellite technologies.

Beyond economic and strategic discussions, regional and international issues such as the Russia-Ukraine conflict were also addressed. Modi reiterated India’s backing for diplomatic efforts to secure peace, while Polish officials welcomed India’s calls for a negotiated solution to the Ukraine conflict. The meeting further acknowledged the longstanding people-to-people connections, including Poland’s assistance to Indian students evacuated from Ukraine in 2022 and the historical support provided to Polish refugees in India during the Second World War.

The meeting signals a significant step in deepening India-Poland relations, as both countries seek to expand trade, enhance strategic cooperation, and build resilient supply chains while benefiting from the broader strategic partnership between India and the European Union.
