India and Japan Strengthen Technology Collaboration Amid Expanding Trade Relations

Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal recently wrapped up a significant four-day visit to Japan, emphasizing the growing interest among Japanese businesses in enhancing their investment, manufacturing, and technological collaborations with India. Leading a business delegation comprising nearly 200 representatives, Goyal engaged with Japanese companies operating in various sectors such as robotics, semiconductors, electronics, renewable energy, and advanced manufacturing.

During the visit, Goyal noted that the business discussions were already yielding potential investment opportunities. Notably, a Japanese robotics company has identified an Indian partner, setting the stage for potential investments and plans to explore the manufacturing of robots within India. These developments underscore the efforts to bolster the presence of Japanese companies in the Indian market, which currently includes around 1,500 firms, with aspirations to significantly increase investment in emerging industries.

A pivotal aspect of the visit was the initiation of discussions aimed at revisiting the India-Japan Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement. This review process seeks to address existing regulatory concerns and expand avenues for business-to-business cooperation, further solidifying the economic ties between the two nations.

The strategic partnership between India and Japan is centered around strengthening trade and investment relations. The two countries have set ambitious targets, aiming to elevate bilateral trade to $27.47 billion by the fiscal year 2025-26, with a long-term vision of reaching $50 billion by 2030. This commitment highlights the shared objective of fostering economic growth through enhanced collaboration.
