Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced a series of rallies by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) across the state from October 13 to 31. These gatherings aim to counteract Congress’s alleged attempts to undermine democratic institutions, according to Sarma. The rallies will be organized at district headquarters and are intended to bolster support for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and reinforce public trust in constitutional institutions.
During a press briefing in Guwahati, Sarma accused Congress and other opposition parties of politically challenging institutions like the Election Commission and the Supreme Court. He criticized the Congress party’s opposition to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, emphasizing the significance of this process in tackling issues related to voter lists and illegal immigration in Assam.
Sarma also targeted Rahul Gandhi, a prominent Congress leader, accusing him of adopting inconsistent standards based on election outcomes depending on the winning party. Furthermore, Sarma criticized Gandhi’s stance regarding the Supreme Court, asserting that constitutional institutions should remain free from political pressure.
The BJP’s planned rallies will primarily focus on advocating for democratic institutions and opposing Congress’s stance on electoral and constitutional matters. This move comes amidst ongoing political tensions between the BJP and Congress in Assam, particularly concerning electoral processes, the independence of institutions, and immigration-related challenges.
