US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has embarked on a significant four-day visit to India, arriving on Saturday with the objective of bolstering strategic relations between the two nations. His agenda is packed with endeavors to enhance collaboration across various crucial sectors, including trade, defense, energy, and technology. During his stay, Rubio is set to engage in bilateral discussions with India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and is also expected to meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi.
The timing of Rubio’s visit is noteworthy as it coincides with the upcoming Quadrilateral Security Dialogue involving foreign ministers from India, the United States, Japan, and Australia. This meeting is anticipated to address pivotal issues such as Indo-Pacific security, defense collaborations, and advancements in critical technologies like semiconductors and artificial intelligence. The discussions will also likely cover the establishment of resilient supply chains in response to concerns about China’s increasing influence in the region.
Trade relations between the US and India are poised to be a focal point of the talks, especially in light of previous tensions arising from tariff measures implemented under President Donald Trump, which affected Indian exports. Both countries are eager to explore ways to enhance economic cooperation while minimizing trade frictions. Energy security is another priority on the agenda, with the US aiming to increase its exports of crude oil and LNG to India. Simultaneously, dialogues will continue regarding India’s procurement of discounted oil from Russia.
Defense cooperation is expected to remain a cornerstone of the discussions. India operates several defense platforms sourced from the US, such as Boeing P-8 Poseidon aircraft, MQ-9B SkyGuardian drones, M777 howitzers, and C-17 Globemaster III transport aircraft.
