Eight people are dead and 19 injured following a car explosion near Delhi’s historic Red Fort. The blast on Monday night has sparked a major investigation and a nationwide high alert. The location, a 17th-century Mughal palace, is one of India’s most significant monuments, and the surrounding Old Delhi area is a “heavily congested” tourist hub.
The explosion occurred at a red light outside the Red Fort metro station. Police Commissioner Satish Golcha said a car had stopped at the light when it detonated. The blast ignited a fire that destroyed over a dozen other vehicles, including cars, rickshaws, and motorcycles.
Witnesses described a horrific scene. One resident, Om Prakash Gupta, ran from his home to see “vehicles on fire” and “body parts all over.” Another witness spoke of the “very strong explosion” and its shock waves, which were felt in nearby buildings.
The investigation is being overseen by the highest levels of government. Home Minister Amit Shah visited the site and confirmed that all angles are being explored. The registered owner of the car has reportedly been detained. Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered condolences and is reviewing the situation.
This incident is the most significant blast in Delhi since 2011. In response, authorities have placed Mumbai, the state of Uttar Pradesh, and large train stations on high alert.
