Malaysia is currently seeking approval from Nepal to dispatch a team of DNA experts to assist in identifying victims of recent catastrophic floods and landslides. According to Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan, the country has made a formal request to send these specialists, who will begin DNA identification processes once search and rescue operations are finalized. The main task will involve comparing DNA samples from the remains found with those collected from the families of Malaysian citizens who are still missing.
Preparations are already underway, as Malaysia has obtained DNA samples from the relatives of 55 Malaysians who continue to be unaccounted for in the aftermath of these natural disasters. In several instances, recovered bodies were buried swiftly due to the lack of adequate facilities, underscoring the critical role that DNA testing will play in ensuring proper identification of the victims.
The team poised for deployment consists of 11 personnel and is equipped with 12.4 tonnes of rescue gear. This includes advanced detection tools, communication systems, high-capacity drones, and specialized equipment designed for tunnel rescues. In addition, they have brought along a four-wheel-drive vehicle and a 10-tonne truck to aid in the operations.
With these combined search, rescue, and DNA identification efforts, Malaysia is hopeful that they will successfully locate the missing individuals. The ultimate aim is to provide closure to families through confirmed identifications of their loved ones, ensuring they receive the necessary information about their relatives amidst the ongoing crisis.
