Negotiations between India and Canada are intensifying as they aim to finalize a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA). Canadian Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu is set to visit New Delhi in mid-October, following the fifth round of talks scheduled for early October in Canada. This visit is expected to coincide with a Canadian trade delegation traveling to India to explore further business and investment opportunities.
The discussions are part of ongoing efforts to strengthen economic relations between the two countries, with progress reportedly made on several crucial issues. However, some matters are anticipated to require high-level ministerial discussions to resolve. Both nations have expressed a desire to conclude the agreement swiftly.
India and Canada initiated CEPA negotiations in March 2026, and four rounds of talks have already been completed, the most recent of which took place in New Delhi from September 14 to 18. The proposed agreement aims to enhance bilateral trade and investment, with a notable trade value of $30.4 billion in goods and services recorded in 2025. Both governments have set an ambitious target to boost this figure to $70 billion by 2030.
As part of the broader initiative to fortify economic ties, India and Canada are exploring collaboration in sectors such as energy, clean technology, life sciences, aerospace, pharmaceuticals, and manufacturing. The ongoing negotiations and upcoming ministerial meetings underscore the commitment of both countries to deepen their economic partnership.
