Chief Justice of India, Surya Kant, has reaffirmed the Supreme Court’s dedication to safeguarding citizens’ rights, with particular emphasis on the younger population. In light of recent student protests and claims of police misconduct, the Chief Justice assured the public that the court is committed to delivering justice through the proper legal channels.
Addressing the mounting concerns, the Chief Justice emphasized that the Supreme Court remains open to all citizens willing to file petitions correctly, ensuring that justice is served where necessary. He highlighted that the court had not previously refused to address the issues at hand. Instead, the absence of a formal petition, as only a representation had been submitted, led to the initial inaction. Such a representation does not conform to the legal prerequisites needed for the court to proceed with judicial hearings.
In response to the recent filing of formal petitions that allege police excesses during the protests on July 20, the Supreme Court has scheduled them for a hearing on the upcoming Monday. This development underscores the court’s commitment to evaluating the claims thoroughly and ensuring that due process is followed.
Chief Justice Kant also addressed the issue of misinformation, cautioning against reports that inaccurately suggested the court had declined to hear the protests-related case. He clarified that the court’s willingness to hear properly filed cases remains steadfast, reinforcing the judiciary’s role in upholding justice and legal integrity.
