President Donald Trump has stepped in to address rising tensions between Thailand and Cambodia, calling leaders from both countries after new clashes erupted along their disputed frontier. The White House confirmed the outreach on Friday as fears grow over renewed instability.
The peace deal Trump co-signed on October 26 had been hailed as a significant achievement during his Asia tour. However, the agreement quickly came under strain when Thailand suspended the truce following a landmine blast that injured its personnel.
Both nations later exchanged accusations of fresh fighting, with Cambodia reporting the death of a civilian during the latest confrontation. The White House said Trump’s calls were aimed at restoring calm and urging both sides to recommit to peace.
Trump also coordinated with Malaysia, which has long served as a mediator in the conflict. Malaysian officials were instrumental in creating the diplomatic framework that led to the earlier ceasefire.
Although the border dispute dates back more than a century, violence flared sharply this summer. A five-day battle claimed 43 lives and forced nearly 300,000 people to flee — a stark reminder of the fragility of peace in the region.
