European capitals are expressing profound alarm after President Donald Trump set a quick deadline for Ukraine to accept a peace plan that involves major territorial cessions to Russia. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the period as one of the most difficult in his nation’s modern history, with officials calling the US-backed proposal capitulation.
Trump specified Thanksgiving next Thursday as the “acceptable deadline” for Kyiv to finalize the controversial agreement. This highly aggressive timeline has deepened concern across Europe, where leaders are publicly stating that the terms are dangerously one-sided and would permanently weaken Ukraine’s ability to defend itself by requiring significant concessions.
In a solemn public address, President Zelenskyy articulated the acute nature of the choice confronting the Ukrainian people. He stated the country faces an “impossible dilemma”: preserve its national dignity and territorial integrity, or risk losing the backing of a US administration that is actively pressuring Kyiv to accept terms that align closely with Moscow’s demands. The immediate consequence of rejection, he noted, is facing another harsh winter of war.
Zelenskyy powerfully warned that the deal would strip Ukraine of its freedom, dignity, and justice. He cautioned sternly against trusting Russia, referencing the historical fact of Russia having launched two previous attacks. He pledged a constitutional defense and vowed never to betray his people, proudly referencing the nation’s defiant refusal to surrender during the full-scale invasion in 2022.
In a united front, European leaders rejected the framework of Trump’s plan, which demanded the surrender of major cities and a reduction in Ukraine’s military strength. They argued forcefully that any peace must fundamentally respect Ukraine’s sovereignty and must be negotiated based on the existing line of contact, not based on terms arbitrarily imposed by Russia.
