The establishment of a new airport in Purulia district is set to significantly enhance air connectivity, boosting tourism and industrial growth in the region. The West Bengal government will formalize this development by signing an agreement with the Centre on September 28, under the UDAN scheme, according to Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari.
Adhikari noted that preparations for the airport are already in place, with the state government having applied for the necessary licenses. A representative from the civil aviation authorities has been involved in discussions, ensuring that the project aligns with national standards and objectives.
Once operational, the airport is expected to serve as a catalyst for economic development in Purulia. The district stands to benefit from improved infrastructure and accessibility, which could attract significant investments in sectors such as defense, steel, cement, and solar energy. Officials are optimistic about drawing investments amounting to around ₹1 lakh crore over the coming year.
The UDAN scheme, aimed at making air travel affordable and widespread, is expected to further integrate Purulia into the national network, supporting not just tourism but also the broader industrial landscape.
