Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Indonesia, an engagement anticipated to enhance India’s strategic ties with a key Indo-Pacific ally. Both nations, recognized as the largest democracies in the region and members of the G20, are focusing on bolstering collaboration across various domains such as trade, technology, healthcare, defense, and maritime security. This visit follows Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto’s journey to India in January 2025, where the two countries celebrated 75 years of diplomatic relations with agreements pertaining to health, digital cooperation, maritime security, and cultural exchanges.
Despite a robust historical relationship and aligned interests, the bilateral trade between India and Indonesia hovers around $30 billion. Both sides are keen on tapping into greater economic opportunities. India is particularly interested in expanding its investments in Indonesia, focusing on sectors like critical minerals, manufacturing, renewable energy, and food security, which are seen as pivotal areas for economic growth.
A significant aspect of the discussions is expected to be digital collaboration, with Indonesia expressing interest in India’s Digital Public Infrastructure and digital commerce endeavors. Additionally, both countries are exploring partnerships in artificial intelligence, fintech, cybersecurity, digital payments, and the support of small businesses, all of which signal a forward-looking approach to technological advancement.
Maritime security remains a high-priority agenda, with plans to strengthen cooperation in the strategic Strait of Malacca. This includes enhancing naval collaboration, improving maritime domain awareness, and expanding defense-industrial partnerships. Indonesia’s efforts to diversify its defense suppliers could pave the way for new opportunities for India’s defense industry.
The visit aims to cultivate stronger people-to-people exchanges through academic, business, and cultural partnerships, fostering a more comprehensive and sustained relationship between the two countries. By promoting such exchanges, India and Indonesia hope to build a solid foundation for long-term collaboration and mutual growth.
