IndiGo, India’s largest airline, is set to temporarily halt its Mumbai-Manchester route from August 31, 2026, due to persistent airspace restrictions, prolonged flight durations, and mounting operational costs. This decision aligns with broader challenges currently affecting international aviation, such as geopolitical tensions, elevated fuel prices, and disruptions in flight routes that have substantially inflated the expenses associated with operating long-haul services.
The airline’s move involves returning one of the six Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft it had leased from Norse Atlantic Airways. These aircraft were initially acquired early in 2025 to aid in IndiGo’s expansion into European markets, preceding the arrival of its own Airbus A350 fleet. Despite the suspension of the Manchester route, IndiGo assures that its other long-haul international services will continue as planned.
IndiGo’s foray into Europe has been met with strong customer demand, helping the airline solidify its presence in crucial international markets. However, airspace limitations have led to longer flight durations, and, when coupled with the rising costs of aviation turbine fuel and fluctuations in foreign exchange rates, have rendered the Manchester route financially unsustainable. Abhijit Dasgupta, Senior Vice President of Network Planning and Revenue Management, characterized the suspension as regrettable yet necessary given the prevailing operational circumstances. He emphasized that customer reception had been positive and reiterated the airline’s commitment to resuming the route when conditions are more conducive.
The airline is also looking into alternative ways to maintain its partnership with Norse Atlantic Airways while pursuing its broader international growth objectives. Passengers impacted by the route suspension will receive advance notice and support, including options for alternative travel arrangements or refunds where applicable.
