Leading Indian airlines, including Air India, IndiGo, and Air India Express, are poised to scale back their domestic flight operations starting in June. This decision is driven by escalating fuel prices, weakened travel demand, and regional tensions, all of which have contributed to higher operating costs.
Air India has announced plans to reduce its domestic flight frequencies by about 22% as part of a temporary network rationalization strategy. Earlier, the airline had already decreased its international operations by approximately 27%. These adjustments aim to mitigate the effects of consistently high aviation fuel prices and challenging operational conditions. Currently, Air India runs around 3,600 domestic flights weekly, and it has assured that passengers affected by these changes will be offered alternative flights, date adjustments, or refunds where necessary.
Similarly, Air India Express will trim some of its domestic services, although the reduction is expected to be less than 10% of its overall network. Despite these cuts, the airline is actively expanding its service on select domestic and international routes, making strategic adjustments to balance capacity with demand. The airline operates more than 3,000 weekly flights across its entire network, including roughly 500 weekly flights between India and West Asia.
IndiGo is also projected to decrease its domestic operations by approximately 10% to 13% compared to the previous quarter, as reported by industry insiders. The airline industry in India is grappling with increased costs primarily due to surging aviation turbine fuel prices, which are tied to ongoing tensions in the West Asian region. Additionally, Indian airlines are facing longer flight routes and increased expenses stemming from the continued closure of Pakistani airspace to Indian carriers.
Industry experts suggest that airlines will likely keep a close watch on fuel costs and passenger demand in the coming months, which will be crucial in determining the timing for reinstating flight frequencies.
